3D mobile – the next step in 3D evolution?

It pains us to write such a shameful cliché, but 3D really is all the rage right now. And with television in particular, it’s easy to see why. It’s the next logical step in the evolution of home entertainment. Black and white TV, colour, colour on a large screen, colour on a large high definition large screen with surround sound and now tridimensional television. If this evolution has proven one thing, it’s that technology doesn’t stay still for long. Asking for 3D to stop at television…

Will there be a 3D camera in the next iPhone?

Will the next iPhone have a camera that can take 3D stills, videos and even 3D images that you can rotate? A patent dug up by Patently Apple shows a design involving two cameras and an imaging processing unit, which will allow users to take 3D images. The camera could be used to take several images of the same object, from different angles, to create a 3D model in the phone. This can then be rotated and viewed by the user. One of the ideas for the patent…

Print a 3D iPhone case

More good news comes from the sphere of 3D printing with firms cooking up more uses for the invention. Previously, tridimensional printing was used on chocolate, bones and a superfast way to print small objects in was also created. With Vibe, which is a fresh and new iPhone app, users can print 3D cases based on their musical preferences. In more detail, the application will allow smartie owners to select a song, the wavelength of…

LG Optimus available to pre-order

It’s being rumoured that the LG Optimus, LG’s new 3D handset, is set to be available in the UK for £515 with a release date of 15 April. The phone was more or less confirmed before LG made any official announcement, so whether these release date and pricing rumours from Expansys prove to be true is questionable, but at this stage it looks as though they are largely accurate. If this is indeed the price of the phone, it is expensive given…

Nintendo issue 3DS warning

Nintendo has issued a warning over it’s new portable games console the 3DS, stating that children under the age of 6 should not use it.  The 3DS is autostereoscopic, meaning that it can be used without 3D glasses.  The technology works with smaller screens because users tends to look straight at the screen, which is required for the full 3D effect if glasses aren’t being used.  However concerns have been raised about the technology, and whether is is good for the eyes, now it seems these concerns have been…

Mobile devices will boost 3D

Market researcher ABI has made a prediction that mobile devices will play a major role in the uptake of 3D as an entertainment format. 3DTVWatcher has always believed that consumer first contact will prove to be an invaluable source of exposure for 3D, and this latest research conducted by ABI confirms this. BlackBerry to go 3D?

It was only a matter of time before BlackBerry’s hat was thrown in to the 3D ring. Sharp, HTC and perhaps Apple are set to launch 3D smart-phones in the near future, and now it seems Research In Motion (RIM) have put plans in place for its BlackBerries to feature a tridimensional display. RIM has bought Swedish company The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), who are specialists in producing user interfaces, described by themselves as ‘beautiful’. TAT…

Softbank launch 3D Android handsets

3DTVWatcher has previously reported on Sharp’s 3D mobile plans, and now those plans are set to launch.  The same autostereoscopic technology which is being used for Nintendo’s 3DS is being used here, meaning users can view 3D content without 3D glasses. The Galapagos 003SH and Galapagos 005SH are both based on the Android 2.2, and Sharp is certainly looking to consumer first-contact with its smartphone to generate interest in the technology generally; and of course its own product range which is including more and more 3D hardware as…
