Sky sees a glasses free 3D future

Speaking at the 3DTV World Forum this week in London, Sky’s newly appointed director of 3D John Cassy revealed that the broadcaster would like to see glasses-free 3D TV become a possibility in the near future.

Autostereoscopic is widely regarded as the answer to many consumers’ apprehensions about the format.

Cassy was enthusiastic about the direction of 3D, despite the fact that glasses free 3D TV of a reasonable quality is still some way off:

“We are not a TV manufacturer, but glasses-free would be a great boost for the industry. However, there is a lot of opportunity in the meantime.”

Sky is clearly unconcerned about the current requirement for viewers to wear 3D glasses, with reports from the broadcaster indicating that subscribers are upgrading packages to get the 3D channels.

It is also understood that the 3D channels will not be made available as a stand-alone service, and will remain exclusively available for the full subscription.

As Cassy alludes to, Sky is not a manufacturer, but Samsung has dipped its toe into the 3D broadcasting realm, with plans to stream additional 3D content to owners of their hardware.
