Optic industry has to enter the 3D market, says panel of specialists

Opticians have yet to embrace the 3D experience fully.

Although the optic industry has commented on the effects of 3D on the eyesight, 3D glasses have not been produced.

Many 3D viewers find the plastic glasses offered in the cinema uncomfortable and ill fitting. Others have complained about headaches and blurred vision and better manufactured glasses might end this problem.

LG has recognised the potential gap in the market and collaborated recently with UK fashion designer Giles Deacon to design a limited edition of 3D glasses which look better and should provide more comfort to the viewer than traditional glasses.

A panel of specialists today said that optometrists should recognize the trend.

One of the reasons to respond swiftly was that 3D displays which do not require glasses such as Nintendo’s 3DS, will become wider available within ten years.

Retail consultant Steve Karbaron said:

“3D is a very easy market to get into and I believe it is there for the picking for the optical world.”

“It is a massive opportunity for the optical market. From a retail market point of view people are going to jump on the bandwagon all over the place,” added Karbaron.
