LG launches 3D tablet

Korean company LG is set to launch a new tablet with 3D recording capabilities at the World Mobile Conference.

There is no official announcement from LG yet on the Optimus Pad, but several sources are claiming to have confirmation of the specification, which includes a 3D camera and 8.9 inch screen capable of displaying autostereoscopic 3D content.

Tablets may well open up a new avenue for 3D content, with the small screen sizes they are ideally suited to glasses-free 3D, which at present is only really possible on smaller screens, and on devices which users tend to use facing directly at the screen, unlike a TV.

Apple has acquired 3D technology patents recently, and the rumours are that the iPhone 5 will feature similar 3D technology, something that may hinder Nintendo’s 3DS sales, given how popular smart-phones are, and the mobile gaming possibilities they offer.

It seems LG has recognised the possibilities for 3D in mobile devices as well, with rumours that their next smartphone will also be 3D enabled.

Other specifications for LG’s tablet include Nvidia’s Tegra processor 2, a running speed of 1GHz and the use of the Android platform.

Once the rumours are confirmed, which will no doubt be very soon, 3DTVWatcher will of course be on hand to report them.

It will come as little surprise when the inevitable iPad 3D rumours gain more momentum, and indeed if an announcement from Apple in the coming months reveals that its new iPhone or iPad will boast 3D capabilities.
