The process of converting the blockbuster Titanic to 3D has been dubbed “mind numbing” by its own director James Cameron.
The three-hour-long blockbuster is currently in the process of being converted for its re-release into theatres on the 6th of April, 2012. The cost of the extensive 2D to 3D transformation is a hefty $18m, however its release should more than make up for it considering there is a whole generation that have never seen the film on the big screen.
Cameron is half way through the process, but claims that it is highly tedious.
When talking to TechRadar, Cameron said:
“It’s a mind-numbing process, it’s like mowing the lawn with a toenail clipper.”
The extensive procedure will hopefully pay off if the reactions of fans are anything to go by.
When an exclusive 15 minute premiere was shown at CineEurope in Amsterdam, the crowd’s response was described as “loud whoops cheers and applause”.
James Cameron has proved himself to be the king of 3D film with the release of the record-breaking Avatar in 2009. However Cameron claimed that he prefered filming in 3D as opposed to converting, “I sit gleefully watching 3D images being shot, a conversion is the exact opposite,” he said.
With his previous track record of box office hits, James Cameron’s Titanic has the potential to do even better than before, when it sets sail into theatres next year.
