All the better to see 3D with…

A couple of months ago I started to wonder why more people haven’t embraced the 3D TV market and all rushed out to get a 3D television set.

I don’t know about you but I personally love the immersion and suspension of disbelief that comes as part of the 3D experience – the flora and fauna are more real, the wind blowing through the trees makes you shiver, and the action is explosive.

My first 3D cinema experience was watching Avatar, which lent itself extremely well to the format.

I didn’t have a problem with wearing 3D glasses to get the complete experience at the cinema, however I did find that if one happened to balance them too much in either direction, the picture was spoiled.

I found myself naturally shifting sitting positions as the film went on and looking from angles to the sides of the glasses which became a problem and made my eyes tired too.

I like to lose myself in the story and develop a connection with the characters and to believe what’s going on in order to get the most out of the escapism.

Obviously I can’t truly dive into the adventure if I have to constantly remind myself not to unbalance my 3D specs – this created a barrier for me.

I managed to overcome this by sitting stiller than I usually do, but surely this is not a long term solution.

I think the problem lies within the comfort factor, 3D glasses have not been made with this in mind so far.

Having thought about this for a while I think the best remedy would be 3D contact lenses, they would slip into your eyes at the beginning of the film and, as a much truer extension of your eyes, enable the 3D experience without any boundaries.

I think disposable and recyclable 3D contact lenses should be on the market as not everyone feels cool and relaxed wearing dark glasses in a room which is pitch-black anyway.

Having said that, I do think that the newer 3D glasses are much more comfortable to wear which means more people will warm up to the idea of having a 3D TV at home.

Until then maybe blinkers to hang on the sides of the glasses to prevent the weird side-view effects?….
