3D glasses may become universal as Electronics giants Sony, Samsung and Panasonic have teamed up with 3D glasses manufacturer Xd Limited to develop glasses that can be used to view any content.
These new specs will not only be suitable for viewing content in the cinema, they will also be suitable for watching 3D TVs.
Samsung’s Jun Yonemitsu, the Deputy Senior General Manager, said:
“Through this alliance, we all look forward to addressing critical industry issues to enable a better consumer experience across products.
“We believe active 3D technology is the most suitable method to deliver full 1080p picture quality to each eye, giving consumers the 3D experience they most desire.”
But the tech companies are not the only who aim to make the 3D experience more accessible, James Cameron, producer of the 3D blockbuster Avatar, has been working with cinematographer Vince Pace to the Cameron-Pace Group (CPG), which will push for the adoption of 3D in everything from movies and TV shows to sports and advertising.
The “full HD 3D Glasses Initiative”, as the project has been dubbed, will be available from 2012.
However, it is worth pointing out that a study conducted last year revealed that consumers preferred to watch 3D content without having to use glasses at all.
